Seedstockers was founded in Barcelona in 2017 with a simple idea: make good cannabis genetics accessible to more growers. A lot has changed since then. Today, Seedstockers is an independent cannabis breeding company developing its own genetics, running breeding programmes and working on innovations such as triploid cannabis. What hasn't changed is the belief that great genetics should be accessible to ordinary home growers.

This Q&A was originally published in 2017, shortly after Seedstockers was founded. At the time, Seedstockers was a young company working closely with Dutch Passion and its business model was very different from the company it is today.

Rather than leaving outdated information online, we have comprehensively updated the article. The story of how Seedstockers started remains an important part of its history, but the answers below describe Seedstockers as it exists today.

What is Seedstockers?

Seedstockers is an independent cannabis genetics and breeding company based in Barcelona, Spain.

The company was founded in Barcelona in 2017 by Jouke Piepenbrink with the help of Dutch Passion. Seedstockers originally focused on making proven cannabis genetics available to growers at very competitive prices.

Since then, the company has evolved considerably.

Today, most new Seedstockers varieties originate from the company's own breeding and production programmes. Seedstockers develops feminized, autoflowering and fast-flowering genetics, as well as more experimental breeding projects such as triploid cannabis.

The team itself is international, with people from Europe and Latin America, but Barcelona remains Seedstockers' home.

How did Seedstockers start?

The original idea behind Seedstockers was surprisingly simple.

There were excellent cannabis genetics available, but seeds were often becoming expensive. We believed that growing your own cannabis should remain accessible and that growers shouldn't necessarily have to pay premium prices simply for attractive packaging, branding or hype.

Dutch Passion helped us enormously during those first years. Their experience, genetics network and knowledge of the cannabis seed industry gave Seedstockers a strong foundation.

Some of the producers we worked with were already carrying out small breeding projects for Seedstockers from around 2017. At the beginning, however, our own breeding work was not the central part of the company.

That changed over time.

Is Seedstockers part of Dutch Passion?

No. Seedstockers has been an independent company since 2022.

Dutch Passion played an important role in the creation and early development of Seedstockers, and we remain extremely grateful to Henk and the Dutch Passion team for the collaboration and support during our first years.

We still consider them friends.

But since 2022 Seedstockers has followed its own direction as an independent genetics and breeding company.

When did Seedstockers become a cannabis breeder?

Breeding work within the Seedstockers network started on a small scale almost from the beginning, but the major change came after Seedstockers became independent in 2022.

That was when we began systematically bringing the results of our own research and breeding programmes to market.

The change did not happen overnight. New genetics take time to develop, test and stabilise. So from 2022 onwards, more and more original Seedstockers genetics have appeared in the catalogue.

Today, the great majority of our newer varieties are the result of Seedstockers' own breeding work.

Does Seedstockers develop its own cannabis genetics?

Yes.

This is probably one of the biggest differences between Seedstockers in 2017 and Seedstockers today.

Many of our more recent varieties have been developed from scratch through our own breeding programmes. This includes genetics such as Rucu Cucu OG©, Panty Punch©, Triton Biscotto Lime©, Terp & Tonic©, Tropical Zmoothie©, Apollo Black Cherry©, Granny's Home©, Drizl Pickl© and other modern Seedstockers varieties.

Our Superior collection consists entirely of Seedstockers breeding work.

At the same time, we don't want to rewrite our own history. Some of the varieties in our Classics collection are based on genetics that originally came from external sources and from the work of other breeders.

Cannabis breeding has always developed through generations of breeders working with, selecting and recombining existing genetics. We think it is better to be transparent about that history than pretend everything appeared from nowhere.

What is the difference between Seedstockers Classics and Seedstockers Superior?

The two collections represent two different parts of Seedstockers.

Seedstockers Classics contains accessible, proven genetics and represents much of the philosophy with which Seedstockers originally started. Some of these varieties originate from genetics sourced externally, while others have been worked and selected by Seedstockers over the years.

Seedstockers Superior, introduced in 2022, represents the newer generation of Seedstockers genetics. Every Superior variety originates from our own breeding work.

Superior is where much of our latest selection, breeding and genetic development can be found.

The idea is not that one collection is "good" and the other is "bad". They serve different growers. Some people want reliable genetics at a very competitive price. Others actively look for the newest terpene profiles, unusual crosses and premium breeding work.

We want to serve both.

Is Seedstockers still a cheap seed bank?

Affordability remains important to us, but we don't see Seedstockers as a price fighter anymore.

Accessibility is one of our core values. We still offer many varieties at extremely competitive prices because we believe good cannabis genetics should not become something only wealthy growers can afford.

At the same time, breeding exceptional genetics costs money.

Selection requires time, space, plants, testing, people and sometimes years of work. Some of our newest genetics are therefore positioned as premium products. They are fairly priced, but they are deliberately not the cheapest seeds on the market.

Our objective today is not to be the cheapest seed bank.

It is to give growers excellent value, whether they are buying one of our affordable Classics or some of the most advanced genetics we produce.

Where are Seedstockers seeds produced?

Most Seedstockers seeds now come from our own productions and breeding programmes.

We work with specialist producers and breeders with whom we have built long-term relationships, predominantly within our own production network.

Some Classics still come from external sources. This is part of the history of the collection and something we have no reason to hide.

The important change is that the balance has shifted dramatically. Most of the genetics Seedstockers has introduced during the last four years are our own breeding work.

What makes modern Seedstockers genetics different?

We don't think there is one single characteristic that should define good cannabis.

Different growers want different things.

Some are looking for exceptional flavour. Others care about yield, potency, resin production, outdoor resistance, speed, unusual plant structures or simply a plant that is forgiving and enjoyable to grow.

Our breeding programmes therefore work in different directions.

What connects them is selection.

We want genetics that perform for actual growers, not only plants that look spectacular in one photograph.

Seedstockers was built around home growers, and that continues to influence how we think about cannabis breeding.

The best cannabis doesn't necessarily come from the biggest facility. It can come from someone's garden, balcony or grow tent.

What is Seedstockers doing with triploid cannabis?

One of our more experimental breeding programmes has focused on triploid cannabis.

The first major commercial result of this programme is Madonna Triploid, an IBL triploid variety developed by Seedstockers.

Most traditional cannabis plants are diploid, meaning they carry two sets of chromosomes. Triploid plants carry three.

Triploidy is interesting for cannabis breeding because it creates different reproductive and plant characteristics and opens an entirely new area for selection and research.

For us, Madonna Triploid is important for another reason as well: it illustrates how far Seedstockers has travelled from the company described in the original 2017 version of this article.

In 2017 we openly said that Seedstockers was not a breeding company.

Today we are developing technologies and genetics that barely existed commercially when Seedstockers started.

Has Seedstockers won cannabis cups?

Yes. Seedstockers genetics have collected more than 70 awards and competition placements around the world (see also our cup-winning Seedstockers strains), alongside awards for Seedstockers itself as a seed bank.

Seedstockers varieties have been recognised in competitions across Europe, Latin America and beyond, including the Highlife Cup, Autoflower World Cup, Amsterdam Coffeeshop Awards, Clouds in the City Cup, The North Grow Cup, Munch & Roll Cup and many others.

Recent award-winning genetics include Rucu Cucu OG©, BCN Critical XXL, Drizl Pickl©, F.U.H©, Forbidden Mochi©, Apollo Black Cherry©, Granny's Home©, Tropical Zmoothie© and many more.

Seedstockers itself has also received seed-bank and brand recognition at events including Cannafest Prague, Canapa Mundi Roma, Cultiva Vienna and other international cannabis events.

Awards are nice recognition, but they are not the reason we breed.

What matters more to us is what happens after somebody opens the packet and actually grows the plants.

Where is Seedstockers from?

Seedstockers is based in Barcelona.

The company was founded there in 2017 and Barcelona continues to be its home.

At the same time, Seedstockers has always been international. Our team includes people from different European and Latin American countries, our founder is originally from Amsterdam, and our growers, producers, partners and community are spread across many countries.

So culturally we are difficult to define as purely Spanish, Dutch or Latin American.

Barcelona is our base, but Seedstockers is an international cannabis company.

What does Seedstockers stand for today?

The purpose behind Seedstockers is to empower people to grow their own cannabis.

Our mission is to develop exceptional and innovative cannabis genetics and make them, together with the knowledge and community needed to grow successfully, accessible to everyone.

That combines four things which have become central to Seedstockers:

Genetic quality

Everything begins with the genetics. Without good genetics, very little that happens afterwards can compensate.

Accessibility

Quality genetics and useful growing knowledge should not be reserved for a small group of people.

Innovation

Cannabis breeding is still developing rapidly. We want to explore what is possible rather than continually reproducing what already exists.

Community

Cannabis culture has always developed through growers exchanging genetics, experience, failures, successes and ideas. We want Seedstockers to be part of that culture rather than simply a company selling packets of seeds.

Has the original Seedstockers idea disappeared?

No. In many ways it has simply matured.

In 2017 our argument was that growers deserved access to good genetics without paying unnecessarily high prices.

We still believe that.

What changed is our ability to contribute genetics ourselves.

Seedstockers started by making existing genetics more accessible. Over time we began breeding, selecting and developing our own. That eventually changed the company from a seed brand into a breeding company.

The objective now is broader than it was in 2017.

We want to develop exceptional and innovative genetics while keeping both those genetics and the knowledge required to grow them accessible.

Because ultimately our vision is quite simple:

A world where growing your own cannabis is normal, accessible and an important part of cannabis culture.

About this article

The original version of this interview was published in July 2017, shortly after Seedstockers was launched.

At that time, Seedstockers worked closely with Dutch Passion, relied much more heavily on externally sourced genetics and explicitly described itself as neither a breeder nor a seed producer.

Those statements were accurate descriptions of the company at the time, but no longer reflected Seedstockers in 2026.

This article was comprehensively updated in October 2026 to preserve the history while accurately describing the company Seedstockers has become.
